General information

Within the German co-operative collection project supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG, =German Research Society), the University Library of Erlangen-Nuremberg has for more than 50 years been responsible for building up and cataloguing a comprehensive collection of literature especially from the subject area of educational science. The collection encompasses German and foreign publications including grey literature. Its basis was formed by a remarkably rich collection of educational literature from the 18th and 19th centuries german.

The collection forms the basis of the database Online Contents Bildungsforschung. Currently more than 95 subject-specific journals are being indexed. The database includes more than 65,000 post-1993 journal articles. They may be requested via the library’s document delivery service.

Materials

Books, journals, theses and reports, school curricula, teacher's handbooks, guidelines, teaching methodology, guides for parents and educators, case studies. Printed material, microforms and electronic publications.

Additions to the collection: 6,000-7,000 items per year.
Period covered: Post-1800 publications: 1800-1949: German publications only, from 1950 onwards: German and foreign publications.

Subjects german covered: All fields of education except pedagogical psychology, teaching methodology for specific subject areas, publications from Eastern Europe, Africa, Asia and South America. ERIC reports will be purchased on demand.

At present, the library subscribes to more than 2,000 German and international subject-specific journals. Holdings include 3,700 discontinued journals and 2,000 current as well as non-current series.

Publications

The publications listed below provide information on holdings and additions to the special subject collection.

  1. Bibliographie Pädagogik. Berlin: Verlag für Wissenschaft und Bildung. 1982 – 1998.
    The annual volumes partly were published in 2 parts:
    1. Systematischer Katalog, 
    2: Personen-, Institutionen- und Schlagwortregister.
    Published in cooperation with "Dokumentationsring Pädagogik (DOPAED)", later "Fachinformationssystem Bildung".
    The publication lists journal articles, books and other titles. It contains 12 – 13,000 German and foreign titles, including about 5,000 books held by Erlangen-Nuremberg University Library.
  2. FIS Bildung Literaturdatenbank.
    It contains the bibliographic data and partly abstracts of about 714,000 post-1980 journal and book articles, books, and gray literature.
    Data from 30, partly highly specialized educational documentation institutions  in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, holdings in Erlangen-Nuremberg University Library included. Update annually.

All titles listed in the above publications can be ordered either via Interlibrary loan requests forwarded by a public or university library or directly via Subito, a fee-based document delivery service.

Catalogues

Books received from 1982 onwards are searchable by subject, author or title on OPACplus (for details see: http://www.ub.uni-erlangen.de/literatursuche/index-en.shtml) or, for specific search, on Bildungsforschungs-OPAC. The retrospective electronic classification of educational literature is in progress.

Databases

The library provides a free of charge search and retrieval service for a variety of educational databases german. It also offers fact information on matters from the field of education.
