Since its foundation in 1743, the University Library has operated as the service centre for the research and teaching community of our university. It now provides access to 5.5 million media items at more than 130 locations. Holdings include 12,000 current print journals. The Library offers access to about 25,000 electronic journals and 1,200 databases.
Within the German co-operative collection project supported by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, the University Library of Erlangen-Nuremberg is responsible for building up a comprehensive collection of literature especially in the subject areas of philosophy and educational science. A rich collection of manuscripts, incunabula and pre-1800 prints grants ready access to source material to the historical disciplines and makes it possible to use original items for academic research and teaching.
At the same time, the library functions as a public and regional library. Users from Erlangen and the region are welcome to borrow or to use its resources in the reading rooms for scholarly or scientific purposes.
