Among the holdings of the manuscript department, there are more than 2,400 manuscripts from the middle ages and the early modern period; 2,100 incunabula; about 19,000 letters dating from the 15th through the 18th centuries from the collection of Christoph Jacob Trew (1695-1769), a Nuremberg scholar; his private library, with 34,000 books and prints one of the most extensive collections of the time; broadsides, legacies, papyruses, as well as ex-libris.
The library houses the Graphic Collection of the University: 1,700 drawings originating from the arts cabinet of the previous margraves of Ansbach, about 5,400 woodcuts and copperplate engravings from the middle ages through the Baroque period; the Luthardt collection of graphic art (1,000 items); about 6,000 prints mainly from the 19th century. Quite an unusual collection in a university library are 16,000 medals and coins from all periods.
